2ºBACH DEDUCTION/TREES and Tips for EBAU

Updated: Sep 3

SESSION 1:

This may sound familiar to you..Yes, people sometimes use this expression to say how easy something is to solve. Some people think that it comes from the Sherlock Holmes stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Holmes says this to his friend Watson when explaining how easy it is to understand something about a crime. But the truth is that the phrase does not appear in the books. Anyway, I used this to introduce DEDUCTION.

Watch this scene from the TV series Sherlock to learn more about what deduction is:

Deductive reasoning is also known as ‘top-down’ logic, where the reasoner begins with an accepted premise and seeks to prove another statement based on previously “known” information. As you have seen in the scene, Sherlock starts with a premise, he must have served in the Middle East, and then searches for evidence.

EBAU, SOME TIPS TO SIMPLY NAIL IT

The EBAU or Evaluación del Bachillerato para el Acceso a la Universidad is an entrance exam that will give you access to Spanish universities. It's a very specific type of exam that you may have seen thousands of times. It is apparently very easy, above all for those who come from a bilingual program or have taken other official language exams like the Cambridge exams but, the truth is that you can mess things up if you don't pay much attention.

After many years correcting this type of exam, I have seen students that, for example, have lost two points simply because they did not read the instructions properly, they are not fully aware of what they are doing, they are tired and rush over it so they, for example, forget to write the evidence in True-False questions! Some of them find the evidence but OMG!!! use it wrongly saying it proves the contrary...One thing is true, you need to practice as much as possible to internalize it and make it yours.

Even if you do not read the text thoroughly, just by skimming the text, you can say what the main ideas are. If you know the structure of a well-written text you can easily find the thesis statement and the topic sentence next to it by reading the first two sentences of the first paragraph. You can also find the other main ideas by reading the first sentence of following paragraphs. Then, you will be able to visualize the skeleton of the text and analyze its purpose. It takes a few minutes, and it finally pays.

Then, take some minutes to read the questions to know exactly what information you may have to look for and then scan the text for details. Use your own words to answer open questions, do not get stuck on a word, if you cannot find it, never mind, there are so many ways to say the same thing, do not try to say it by coining new words!!! Yes, the corrector will read the exams and even if you write a Spanish term or an invented word like "on the quiet" they are going to notice.

What about question number 3, synonyms? A synonym is a word that has a similar meaning to another word in the language. But this does not mean that two words that are considered synonyms are interchangeable. For instance: When you say someone is unique, you’re telling them they are one of a kind. But if what you’re actually trying to say is that they are important to you normally use the word “special.” Also important, make sure you know the type of word you are looking for, ask yourself where in the sentence you would find a word like that and then look for the same type of word: adjective, adverb, noun, verb, preposition, etc.

Grammar should not be a problem for you, you will have been drilling the key structures for a year. However, the difficulty here is that you will not have any instructions about what to do except for "fill in the gaps with the correct form of the verbs, or, use a suitable word, or, rephrase the sentence with the word given...

And here it comes, the writing. Read the criteria and watch this video and learn some tips for success:

SESSION 4:

THE GLOBAL WATER CRISIS

You should know some facts:

1. What would you do without a clean water supply? Would you be able to survive? Well, 2.2 billion people lack access to safely managed drinking water services. However, one important milestone has been the recognition in July 2010 by the United Nations General Assembly of the human right to water and sanitation.

But, what is supposed to be "enough water" for personal and domestic uses? Between 50 and 100 litres of water per person per day. Nevertheless, only a bath consumes between 150 to 300 litres.

  • Shower: 50-100 litres

  • Flushing a toilet: 10 litres

  • Washing dishes by hand: 23 litres

  • Dishwasher: 20-40 litres.

  • Washing machine: 40-80 litres

  • Defrosting food under the tap: 25-25 litres

  • Leaving the water running for 1.5 minutes while you brush your teeth can use more than 18 litres!!!!

  • Washing your car with a hose: 200-500 litres.

So next time you leave the tap running, you'd better stop and think...

2. Go to page 25 from your books Shape the Future 2, listento the interview and do exercises 1-6.

This is it! Have a nice weekend! ;)
