In many ways Hip Hop is essentially American music. It was first created in the Bronx, a borough of New York City that was economically depressed, dangerous and mostly abandoned by the local government. The first to create Hip Hop were young people of color living in struggling communities with none or few opportunities. They were the first to embrace modern music technologies (first turntables, then drum machines and later samplers) and used them creatively, often in ways even their manufacturers never intended. Indeed, the origin story of Hip Hop is one of opening doors that had been tightly shut.
But rapping can be traced back to its African roots. Centuries before hip-hop music appeared, the griots of West Africa were delivering stories rhythmically, over drums and sparse instrumentation. Jazz, which developed from the blues and other African-American and European musical traditions and originated around the beginning of the 20th century, has also influenced hip hop and has been cited as a precursor of hip hop.
