2ºBACH Podcasting/Modals

Updated: Sep 3

SESSION 1:

There's a big difference between just recording an audio and share it with your friends and starting a podcast. A podcast is defined as a digital audio file made available on the internet for downloading to a computer or mobile device, typically available as a series, new instalments - a single portion of something issued or published in parts at fixed times- of which can be received by subscribers automatically.

1. What is a podcast? Listen and Learn.

3. What are the benefits of podcasting? Draw a T-chart and summarize the content of the video. Write the key ides on the left and the details on the right.

SESSION 2:

Let's start Unit 2 Is there a Planet B? We will go down into the grammar content of this unit for a start:

MODALS!

Modals verbs are like auxiliary verbs. You already know three auxiliary verbs:

  • I am talking to you. Verb TO BE here does not mean "exist"...

  • I have done my homework. Verb TO HAVE here does not mean "own, possess"...

  • Do you speak English? Verb TO DO here does not mean "carry out"...

...like in the following sentences where they have a lexical meaning:

  • I am 14 y.o.

  • I have a brother

  • I do my homework everyday

Well, modal verbs also have a grammatical function and behave like auxiliaries:

  • They can appear before the subject in questions. Can you speak now?

  • They have a negative form. No, I can't. I'm busy.

But, there's a difference. As opposed to auxiliary verbs, they have "meaning" but in their case it is called modality

You should call your grandparents. They might be feeling lonely. (advice)

You must call the police. Somebody has shot the shopkeeper. (obligation)

Other modalities:

  • Permission : May I come in?

  • Ability: I could swim at the age of 3

  • Prohibition: You must not smoke here

  • Lack of necessity: You don't have to/ don't need to come to school on Saturday

  • possibility: It can rain tomorrow

  • probability: He might be right

Something you should know is that a modal can be used to express different modalities:

  • I can swim

  • I could go and see if she's at home

  • That can't be true

  • Can I borrow you stapler?

  • You can't smoke here!

Form is also very important. There are four features about modals you need to remember:

  1. Modal verbs are defective. They don't have tenses. You won't find things like canned or musted!!!!!! WRONG. So, what if I want to express possibility in the past?... With COULD or BE ABLE TO. And obligation in the past???...With HAD TO

  2. Modal verbs are neutral. The third person singular has no -s. So forms like cans or mays!!!! are unacceptable. WRONG

  3. Modals cannot be followed by other modals: will can or will must are WRONG! So how can you express the future of these two modals? .....Again, with the expressions WILL BE ABLE TO and WILL HAVE TO.

  4. And finally, modals are followed by infinitive WITHOUT TO.

  • can to drive WRONG!!!!

  • can drive. RIGHT!
