by tomorrow / 8 o'clock
this year / month / week
next year / month / week
for 5 hours, for 10 years, for a few days, for 6 months
since morning, since Friday, since 1996, etc.

SESSION 3:
BEING TACTFUL
What's funny about the following cartoon?
What do you think about this definition of TACT?
Tact is defined as the ability to avoid upsetting or offending people by being careful not to say or do things that would hurt their feelings. Tact is a communication skill.
When we communicate tactfully, we can preserve relationships, build credibility, and demonstrate thoughtfulness.
Imagine the following situation: Your best friend has just finished giving a presentation. He seems to be happy with his performance, but it's evident that he wasn't properly prepared. His pronunciation was poor, the presentation was badly researched and disorganized. Not only that, you're disappointed by his lack of effort. But after the presentation, he wants some feedback form you. You want to be sincere and tell him the truth but do not want to hurt his feelings. Here you need to be tactful.
There are some things you can do:
Choose your words carefully so that the others do not perceive your comments as an attack.
Avoid saying YOU, like in "you need to do better next time", "you missed the point". What would you say instead? Maybe "Next time, I think your presentation would be stronger if you spent more time on research."
Use I: "I myself had to improve my speaking skills", "as I see it", "I would....If I were you...."
Use a "cushion," or connecting statement, when you disagree with someone. "I appreciate your suggestion, but I see it differently"
Only say what you need to say. The more you speak, the more opportunities you have to say something tactless.
Show empathy, try to feel in the same situation. How would you react?
Focus on the positive aspects.
Do not react emotionally
Do not use too much tact, remember you want to help the other person.
1. Write a tactful answer to his question. you need to bear in mind the suggestions given above.
2. WATCH THIS VIDEO. Listen to the dialogues and determine if they are tactful or not. What words do they use?
3. Go to page 86 and do exercises 2 to 5.
SESSION 4:
SPEAKING PART 1
Speaking in public is possibly your number one fear. But don't worry, the more you practice the better your performance will be. First of all you need to know what the exam will be like. So, first things first!
Speaking Part 1 is really short, it lasts around 2 minutes. This means that you only have two minutes to say you...
1. Watch the following video to see a real example:
