  • Reporting verbs always in the past: said, told, asked, cried, advised...Revise irregular past forms:

  • Verb back-shift and change of time and place reference. No inverted commas:

"Paul called me yesterday", he said

He said Paul had called him the day before


  • No inversion: Subject-Verb as in statements, no question marks, no inverted commas in questions:

SESSION 3:


LAUGHING AT YOURSELF


One of the most valuable skills you can develop in your life is the ability to laugh at yourself, and yet far too many people never make the effort to develop it. Embarrassment is inevitable - we’re human.


1. Listen to Dr. Canfield talking about the benefits of laughing at ourselves and answers the questions below:



  • Why are we reluctant to laugh at ourselves?

  • Why is it the way you respond to mistakes so important?

  • What is the difference between people laughing at you and people laughing with you?



  • What are the benefits of laughter?

  • What ability did Presidents Kennedy or Reagan have?

  • What personal anecdote does Dr. Canfield tell and what do we learn from it?


2. Remember the interview in the Photostory on page 116 and 117 and answer these questions: How did Nicole's friends react to what happened after the interview? How did Nicole herself react?


3. How embarrassing are the situations in exercise 2 on page 118. Put them in order from more embarrassing to less embarrassing and say why.


4. Think about an embarrassing situation you or somebody you know experienced. Say:

  • Who was the person?

  • What happened?

  • Why was it embarrassing?

  • How did the person react?


5. Learn form this: Watch this video and say how the person reacted and how this saved the interview.



6. Conclusion:

  1. Why was or would have been laughing at yourself beneficial in an embarrassing situation?

  2. Do you know anybody that is good at laughing at him/herself?

  3. How do you usually react when you do or say something embarrassing?
