People dreamed. People left. And they all came back. It was like Arkansas's version of a black hole; nothing could escape it. I lay there silent beside my brother, my best friend and his girlfriend wading in the water before me, and I knew we were all just in the prelude to disappointment after disappointment.


7. Read the excerpt taken from Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë and analyze the MOOD:


Wuthering Heights is the name of Mr. Heathcliff’s dwelling. ‘Wuthering’ being a significant provincial adjective, descriptive of the atmospheric tumult to which its station is exposed in stormy weather. Pure, bracing ventilation they must have up there at all times, indeed: one may guess the power of the north wind blowing over the edge, by the excessive slant of a few stunted firs at the end of the house; and by a range of gaunt thorns all stretching their limbs one way, as if craving alms of the sun. Happily, the architect had foresight to build it strong: the narrow windows are deeply set in the wall, and the corners defended with large jutting stones.

SESSION 5:


We will finish this week with our reading, We Were Liars by E. Lockhart


1. Read chapters 6-10 and write a single summary for the five of them.


2. Once you've finished read and summarise answer the following questions:


a. Describe the Sinclairs. In what ways are their family experiences unique? In what ways are they like most other families? How do they deal with deaths, addictions, and the tragedies that afflict all types of families?


b. In what ways does her father’s abandonment of their family impact Cadence? What can be inferred about his choice to no longer live as part of the Sinclair family?


c. Consider Cadence’s narration. Though she freely admits she remembers little and is on a number of medications, do you believe her version of the story?
