Welcome back!
A year of snow, a year of plenty,
they say...
SESSION 1:
BE YOUR OWN LIFE COACH
We usually start a new year making resolutions and setting goals, this year we would rather start writing a resolution list with easy, good-for-you goals. Maybe you'll set your sights on your mental health, sleep routine, the mess in your room — or the mess of your wardrobe! In other words, take control of your own life!
1. Please read the tips for better resolutions in the following article from NY Times:
2. About this article:
a. What does SMART stand for? Explain
b. Now write a list of SMART resolutions you would like to achieve this year and share them with your partners.
Many people don't seem to be able to put things in order by themselves and need a life coach. This is the case of the American celebrity Lindsay Lohan.
3. Watch this video where she is talking with her life coach and explain what the life coach is trying to do.
4. In which situations would the help of a life coach be useful?
SESSION 2:
LOOKING FOR HARMONY
Please, take some time to observe the picture above. What can you see? Suggest words you could use to describe it, brainstorm your ideas in your notebook. Maybe you thought of:
C.......d.......r
B......t.....n
O.....ch........a
1. Now go to page 99 from your books and answer question 1. Describe the person's behavior and emotions. She is a very famous Spanish conductor, do you know her name?
2. Interpreting music implies understanding its musical structure including harmony, tonality, rhythm, texture, and form, its stylistic elements, and the composer’s intent. But the process of conducting a group of musicians has a great complexity since there are several instruments to be led, directed, managed, and heard. That's why many draw parallels between the act of leading an orchestra and organizing the different elements of your life. Please, do question 2 on page 99.
4. There are many things in your life that require attention, ones are enjoyable but others aren't. Now, answer question 3 on page 99.
5. Listen to this song and fill in the gaps:
Sitting on a ............. of the road Sitting 'cause my car is ...................... Just try to forget, but I'm ..................... my breath Trying to get ..........

6. What is the singer's attitude towards taking control of his own life?
SESSION 3:
THE GLASS CEILING
One poll showed in 2014 that of the 150 top named conductors in the world, only 5 are women...
1. Why in your opinion are there so few female conductors? Please write your answer in your notebook. Then, watch this inspiring video and compare your answer.

c. What surprising comments seemed to revolutionize the world of work at that time?

SESSION 4:
CAMBRIDGE EXAM PRACTISE: SPEAKING PART
JUMPING TO A HASTY CONCLUSION
People sometimes jump to conclusions with little evidence. This is called "hasty" conclusions. A hasty conclusion is a type of logical fallacy. A fallacy is an argument that is based on mistaken reasoning. When one makes a hasty generalization, he applies a belief to a larger population. Here you have an example:
QUESTION: What hasty generalization do they make? WHY?
A further example, if my grandfather used to smoke a lot but lived till the age of 103, and he was healthy, I could say that smoking is healthy and doesn''t really make a person ill. However, I don't have a large enough sample population to make this claim. I have generalized based on one person. You jumped to a hasty conclusion.
To spot a hasty conclusion you just need to watch out for clue words like all, none, most, many, always, everyone, never, sometimes, usually, hardly ever...
A. Go to page 101 from your books and do the exercises in the section Train to Think. Those who are working on their own at home, please use your WhatsApp group chat and send an audio to your partners where you say the most common misconceptions about teenagers...IN ENGLISH! (...this could be obvious for some but, believe me, it is necessary)
Send me the audio too, please.
B. Write a hasty conclusion next to each situation:
Example: "I had a bad experience with a teacher in IES CORTES DE CADIZ...All the teachers in IES CORTES DE CÁDIZ are bad with students."
You visit a new country and the first person you meet in the airport is rude ............
Jane has a terrible experience with a boyfriend.........
Paul 's grandparents do not know how to use a computer. ..............
My granny likes to bake and drink hot tea. ..............
A female driver cuts you off in traffic............
Alissa has class with a football player who is a class clown. He disrupts the class and is failing. .............................
On the first day of high school, Mark runs into a blonde girl who is not very clever..............................
Loida taught my older brother, who was a very bad student..................
Sarah has four friends from Pozuelo who are VOX supporters.................
