WEEK 11 4ºESO

Updated: Sep 2, 2022

SESSION 1:

LITERATURE

The Backward Fall is a short story written by Jason Helmandollar which he himself adapted for a Canadian film in 2013.

1. Have a look at the pictures below and try to predict what the story is going to be about both in a literal and figurative way. Write your ideas in your notebook:

Choosing a suggestive or not too literal title helps the reader raise interest in the story. This way the context is vaguely defined and encourages the reader to engage with the text to find out more.

2. Read the introductory paragraph on page 96 from your books Citizen Z B2 and check your ideas.

SKIM THE TEXT

Skimming a text or reading a text quickly can help you to source relevant information in texts and articles quickly. It is a bird's eye view of the text. But, what do I need to read? Here you have seven tips:

1. Read the introduction to know what the topic is about.

2. Read the first one or two sentences of the paragraphs and the concluding sentence too.

3. Try to predict the direction of the plot.

4. Resist the temptation to stop to read the details.

5. Think about the purpose of it.

6. Pick up the broader concepts and significance of the text.

7. If some new words repeat several times, only look up those words.

3. Skim the text. Visualize the scene as if you were looking in through the window:

  • What does the writer tell us about it? (furniture, rooms, objects...)

  • What effect does it have in the atmosphere of the scene?

SCAN THE TEXT

When you scan a text you look for details. The goal of scanning is to locate particular facts. You act as a flesh-and-bone search engine. You normally do this after reading a set of questions.

1. Know what you're looking for. Decide on a few key words.

2. Look for only one keyword at a time. One scan for each key word.

3. Let your eyes float rapidly down the page until you find the word or phrase you want.

4. When your eye catches one of your keywords, read the surrounding material carefully.

4. Scan the text. Read the questions in exercise 2 on page 96 form your books. Then, look for key words. While reading make notes about the ideas for the questions. If the text does not give you a clear-cut answer, give your own interpretation, but, use information from the extract to support your opinions.

5. Watch this video and see how music can awaken feelings or memories.

Answer these questions in your notebook:

a. Why do we remember words of songs, even if we have not listened to them for years? Is there a connection between music and memory?

b. To what extent does a carer really help?

c. What are the limits of their involvement?

SESSION 2:

THE CHALLENGES OF DEMENTIA

AS DEPICTED IN FILMS

Alzheimer is a type of dementia that involves a progressive destruction of memories and thinking skills. It often starts from 5 to 20 years before symptoms appear. Symptoms can go from difficulty remembering new information to confusion, mood, behavior changes, and inability to care for one’s self and perform basic life tasks. It is ultimately fatal.

Today, you will listen to Jimmy, our language assistant, reading the extract from The Backward Fall by Jason Helmandollar. As you know, this short story depicts the progress of Dementia in a woman's mind, the falling into her own memories and how it affects the whole family. Jimmy will also add a short introduction and his view of dementia as depicted in films.

1. Listen to Jimmy. Draw a T-chart and summarize both introduction and review.

2. Do some research on any of the films dealing with the topic of dementia Jimmy mentioned or surf the Internet for a different one. You should write a 120-word review on the film. Here you have some tips:

SESSION 3:

REVISION UNITS 7&8

This week you will be taking (future continuous) this term's second test. It is a good opportunity to amend your errors so let's revise the main contents. Two major grammatical topics: future tenses, particularly future continuous and future perfect and conditional sentences.

Main mistake with future forms, first, the form, bother regular and irregular past participles, revise them please. Second, many of you can't discriminate the continuous form versus the perfect form of the verb. As regards conditional sentences, you kind of understand first and second types but when it comes to the third type, you mix up things. However, when you are supposed to mix conditionals (third-second, second-third) you don't have a clue...interesting.

Soooo, this is your last chance to understand it before the exam, please, make a little effort:

FUTURE CONTINUOUS VS. FUTURE PERFECT

1. Watch this video to see the difference between both tenses:

2. Download this document. Again, read the explanation carefully and do the exercises:

CONDITIONAL SENTENCES

3. Watch this video to know more about the third conditional:

4. Check your understanding by doing this exercise on the third conditional.

5. Now, watch this video on MIXED CONDITIONALS:

6. Now do this exercise on mixed conditionals.

SESSION 4:

WE WERE LIARS CHAPTERS 51-55

  1. Listen to Maddie while reading chapters 51 to 55 from We Were Liars. Write new words in your Glossary and summarize the chapters.
