VOLUNTEERING ABROAD. WOULD RATHER/HAD BETTER

Updated: Sep 15, 2020

Have you ever thought of volunteering abroad? Many students decide to take a gap year to travel abroad and help others. You will listen to one of them, Laura.

1. Please, click on the link and listen twice. Go to page 140 from your books Shape the Future 2 and do exercises 1&2.

PREFERENCES: To show preference we normally use the expression 'Would Rather' After would rather, we use the infinitive without to.

I would rather stay at home than go to a movie.

It means....... (I prefer staying at home)

I would rather leave. (I would like to leave.)

Contracted Would - I'd, He'd, She'd, We'd, You'd, They'd

She'd rather stay with me than go out with you.

They'd rather play with the baby than change its diaper.

You can't confuse it with 'Had Better' which expresses advice and warning.

The meaning of had better is similar to should.

You had better watch your steps.

She had better listen to you.

It's getting late. I had better go.

Contracted form of had better - I'd better, You'd better...

Notice that the contracted forms of had and would are the same and that I'd can be I had or I would so we need to look at the context to see what's meant to be said.

I'd rather lie than to hurt you. (I would)

I'd better tell the truth. (I had better)

2. Read this poster on the benefits of volunteering abroad and re-order the benefits from more important to less important according to your interests. Explain why they are important for you. You can use expressions like would rather and had better.

GoEco is a leading eco-tourism company with a varied selection of affordable, ethical volunteer projects abroad. Since launching in 2006, GoEco has sent thousands of individuals to participate in over 150 volunteer projects around the world.

3. Take a look at their website, read other students' comments and write a paragraph saying what project would you like to participate in and why.

Bye!
