'There's no place like home' The Wizard of Oz (1939)...
But it was great to go out for the first time after 40 days, wasn't it?!
I hope you have shaken off all the anxiousness and sadness of being trapped in your 'home sweet homes'. In fact, I'm afraid that if you hadn't gone for a walk, you wouldn't have been able to bear the situation any more.
Yes, I have used a third conditional sentence. First and second conditionals talk about the future whereas third conditionals explain imaginary situations in the past, in other words, an impossible past condition. Why would we bring the past again? Because we like to dream!! 'You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one'...remember? Maybe not, you are too young...
What if you hadn't gone for a walk?
If you hadn't gone for a walk, you wouldn't have been able to bear the situation any more.
There are two parts, one expresses the condition, the if clause, and the other part of the sentence or main clause expresses the result.
CONDITION: If you hadn't gone for a walk,
RESULT: you wouldn't have been able to bear the situation any more.
Why would you put the main clause after the subordinate clause? We do it because we mentally follow the logical order of the principle CAUSE and EFFECT. And if you pay attention, there's a comma after the if clause which says that the grammatical order has been changed. But you can swap them and put the main sentence before the if- clause and it will still mean the same. It's all about what we want to emphasize.
Let's analyse the form:
Tenses: if + subject + past perfect, subject + would have + past participle (-ed/third column for irregular verbs)
had (not) gone would (not) have been
Check question forms:
What would you have done if you had not been able to go out for a walk?
This is the tricky part: WOULD + SUBJECT +HAVE + PAST PARTICIPLE
There's subject-verb inversion as in all questions. It is would or the modal auxiliary that comes to the front of the sentence.
1. Watch the video and test your understanding of third conditional sentences. I want to make sure that you watch it so write down in your notebook the main points of the video.
2. Now do exercises 1-3 on page 137 from your Student's book and then page 109 from your Workbooks.
If you don't have your Workbooks with you, check your mails. I sent you a link with Unit 12.
