REPORTED SPEECH. VERB PATTERNS

Updated: Sep 15, 2020

Top of the mornin’ to ya!

Let's celebrate this beautiful sunshine! :)

Today we will analise a verb pattern that is very common in reported speech:

reporting verb + object + (not) to infinitive

Some common verbs:

They follow the same structure as tell:

She told him not to leave the job

Remember: NEVER USE SAY IN THIS STRUCTURE

1. Watch the video below to know more about verb patterns :

2. Then, write two sentences with verbs followed by gerund and two followed by infinitive.

Examples:

I saw him doing exercise. (verb + obj + gerund)

He loves running (verb+ gerund)

I wanted him to go shopping with me. (verb + obj + infinitive)

I want to buy some clothes (verb + infinitive)

There are also passive reporting sentences that express a recognized fact like:

It is said/known/thought that some citizens are being fined for not following coronavirus quarantine orders.

3. Watch this video to know more about passive reporting structures:

4. Write four examples of passive reporting sentences that appear in the video.

5. Then do Grammar and Vocabulary exercises from page 127 to drill these structures.

Enjoy your day! and...don't forget to smile :)
