The use of Reported Speech

What's the story morning glories? Today we will revise Reported Speech.

How to use Reported Speech:

Follow these 5 steps:

Ex: She said: "I am going to text my friends now and say hello!"

1. Define the type of the sentence (statement, questions, command)

It is a statement

2. What tense is used in the introductory sentence?

say (said)

3. Do you have to change the person (pronoun)?

Yes: She said that she ....her...

4. Do you have to backshift the tenses?

Yes: She said that .... was going to text .......

5. Do you have to change expressions of time and place?

Yes: She said that................................then...................

STRUCTURE:

REPORTING SENTENCE (say, tell, ask, encourage, advise...) + REPORTED SENTENCE

She said + (that) she was going to text her friends then and (omitted: she was going to) say hello.

• NO INVERTED COMMAS

• BACKSHIFT IN TIME
