"When the cat's away, the mice will play"

Updated: Sep 15, 2020

Somebody there? ...When the cat's away....

This is a common proverb used for saying that people will do what they want and have fun if someone in authority is not there.... I hope you enjoyed the break!...But, the cat's back!!!

Come on! This doesn't mean you have to get bored to death! Here you have a video that will explain very graphically the meaning of this expression:

You can use a proverb in different contexts that can go from the most literal to the most metaphoric. For instance, "Dead dogs don't bite", in Spanish, "Muerto el perro se acabó la rabia", will have an application in "They have found a cure for Covid-19...dead dogs don't bite".

1. Why would they choose this title "When the cat's away, the mice will play" to their video? Explain.

There are other common expressions related to entertainment like the ones below.

2. Write them in your personal glossary and look for their meaning. Then write a sentence next to them. Please, avoid sentences like "A good laugh is good" or "I love a good laugh". The sentences need to help you understand the meaning.

  • crack : He's always cracking jokes

  • fling: The girls are going to the beach for one last fling before the end of summer

  • frolic: A group of suntanned children were frolicking on the beach

  • a good laugh :...................................

  • a real hoot:.......................

  • giggle:...............................

  • lark:.................................

  • riot:..............................

  • romp: ...........................

  • horseplay:.........................

2. Now do exercises 1-6 on page 80 from your books in your notebooks, and please don't send me blurry pictures.

That's all folks! Thanks!
