Hi there!

Today we will revise Units 11&12! Go to page 141 from your books Citizen Z B1.

The basic structure of the Reported Speech, also known as Indirect Speech is like follows:

MAIN SENTENCE + SUBORDINATE SENTENCE OR

REPORTING SENTENCE (reporting verb like say or tell) + REPORTED SENTENCE

  • I told + my students (Indirect Object) to work on verb patterns (Direct Object)

  • I said + (that) they will have an exam (Direct Object)

1. Let's start with Say and Tell: listen to the explanation. You will hear I use the term clause sometimes. A clause is a syntactic construction containing a subject and predicate and forming part of a sentence. A sentence is an independent unit itself.

2. Make a mind map about say and tell. If you have doubts about how to make a mind map, please, watch this video:

3. Now you can do exercise 1 from page 141. Then take these two quizzes:

Another two tricky structures are verbs let and allow. They can also be used to report what has been said. Example:

'Children, go and have as much ice cream as you want', she said.

Let presents the same structure as make or help:

'Make him say the truth'

'Help him do his homework'

let/make/help + bare infinitive (without to) + object

Allow is followed by a to infinitive clause :

'She allowed him to have as much ice cream as they wanted'

4. Now do exercise 2 from page 141.

This is all for today. Have a nice 'springy' day! ;)
